There was a record turn out for the Serpentine ladies at the first Met League of the 2010-11 season on Saturday at Claybury.
The women's team manager, Stephanie Vaatz, ran out of numbers before the start and I ran out of red and yellow hair ribbons (essential kit!). We figured this was a good sign!
The start line was a sea of red and yellow with a mix of our more experienced XC runners along with first-timers. We had 39 ladies that ran - our highest number in any Met League to date. It was really great to see so many 'Serpettes' there for the first race of the season. The women's course was 6.1km of an undulating but not-too-muddy course.
Congratulations to all 39 ladies especially the first timers as sometimes these things can be a bit daunting, but you all ran incredibly well!
Well done to Becky, Sylvie, Mariah (all three of whom finished in the top 10!), Fiona, Christine and Tanya who formed our scoring 6, however as I have told the girls, every Serpette that runs makes a difference to the final points total so really you all deserve a huge pat on the back and a big thank you! A special mention to Rachel Whittaker also who ran whilst heavily pregnant and is definitely an inspiration to us all.
The Serpettes are currently (and proudly!) top of the table after the first Met League race. Highgate Harriers are hot on our heels, only 22 points behind, so we will be looking to turn out the same numbers and performances at the next race - our home match in Trent Park - as no doubt they will be out to seek revenge.
Many thanks to the Serpentine men who arrived early to cheer the girls on and for others that came along to support and wave pom poms. It is most appreciated!
Look forward to seeing you all again at the next Met League on the 13th November at Trent Park for our Home Match (where we will make sure that we have enough numbers and ribbons to go around!).
