Weekly Serpie round-up, 5 September 2018

Half Marathon Club Championships, 2 September

The half marathon club championships took place on Sunday 2nd September at the Maidenhead Half Marathon. At least 50 Serpies took part, with Nicolas Besson becoming men's club champion (and third in the overall race) with a time of 1:10:50, Victoria Crawford women's champion with a time of 1:25:16) and Avril Riddell getting the age-graded award with a score of 85.4%. Congratulations!

There were many PBs on a warm day, from the likes of Henry Kemp, Ahlem Ben Gueblia and Ana Penalver, to name but a few. And just a final reflection on the strength in depth of our older runners. In the men's V40 category we had 3 of the first 6 runners. Ladywell 10000, 2 September

18 Serpies took part in the seven seeded races over 25 laps at Ladywell, south-east London. Amongst the highlights were:

• Izzy Clark breaking her own club record to finish first woman in race 5, with a time of 34:34:70
• Jeremy Agnew winning race 4 by over a minute to claim a big PB in 34:58:40
• Big PBs too for Ben Tolputt (33:05:10) and Nathan Wilkins (33:25:60)
• A return to form for Nick Torry (31:40:10)
• A PB for Chris Wright (30:55:00) who is now third on the all-time 10000m (track) Serpie rankings.

Well done to Kent AC for putting on such a well-organised event for only the second time, which is part of a welcome trend as longer-distance track racing becomes more and more popular. Serpentine results. (Report: Tom Poynton; photo: Kent AC)

Wild Dart Swim and Aquathlon, 1 September

Wanting a swimming adventure we travelled to Totnes this weekend for the Wild Dart Swim and Aquathlon. This new, low key event had options to suit all of us: a 2.5k swim for Garnet Walters; an 7k Aquathlon (2.5k swim + 4.5k run) for Beate Vogt and 15k Aquathlon (2.5km swim + 12.5km run) for me. It’s a scenic spot (aka hilly and tidal) and bonus km on the trail run to take in a vineyard to provide an extra challenge. Despite missing out on winners’ prizes, we all achieved our goal of having fun and would recommend this to others who prefer small, friendly events slightly lacking in frills. Rosenheim Final, 22 August

Serpentine’s male and female teams contested the Rosenheim League final last week. Whilst the women qualified comfortably, the men had somewhat squeaked over the line in the last match. The match was incredibly high quality with some exceptional times including a sub 1:29 4*200m from overall men’s winners Hercules Wimbledon. In the end both Serpentine teams finished behind the teams who qualified above them in the Eastern Division plus Epsom and Ewell from the Western Division.

There were some great performances on the night: Henry Kemp set the fastest Serpie time of the year over 400m hurdles; David Matthew smashed his own M50 (and M45/M40) 800m club record (2:04.86 is also the second fastest M50 in the UK this year!) from the previous Southern League; David Cull and Frank Womelsdorf continued their battle for the King of the Throws title; and Camilla Allwood and Laura Carmichael set PBs in the triple jump and 1500m respectively.

Club Handicap, 1 September

We had perfect running conditions - warm and sunny - on Saturday and a great turn out of 75 runners (including 10 scratch) for the Club Handicap race during the Super Serpie weekend. 

Carolyn Jackson claimed first place with a 2 minute gap, followed by Brett Osler and Eddie Ware, both smashing their PBs by over a minute. Eddie's effort to claim third was outstanding as he was the last runner to start with a 22min 45sec gap to make up. More fantastic PBs came from Alex Bernigaud, Meredith Clark, Maike Von Heymann, Robert Crangle and Monica Mundo.

As always there was fantastic support from all the marshals and race officials who make this such a special event. The race was concluded with the presentation for two new Life Memberships of Serpentine RC, to James Stratford and Ian Hall - well deserved for all their dedication to this fantastic running and triathlon club.
