Report

The ING Route du Vin 10k and Half Marathon are Luxembourg’s second biggest running event after the ING night half marathon earlier in the year. The Route du Vin has the advantage of being flatter, more scenic, a morning run at a civilised time (11.00 for the 10k) and at a nicer time of year- early autumn. The 10k race is a mid-size event with 800+ participants, mainly a younger (under 30) age bracket, and is very well organised. Sustainability is at the heart of the race. The goody bag doesn’t have any tat in it; the medals are wooden; the runners guide is sent by email and you’re encouraged to come by public transport. Post race snacks are bananas and oranges with just very little packaging anywhere, bar the recyclable plastic cups. The half marathon is a slightly bigger event which starts 45 minutes earlier. The course is a straight one on the N10 major road with barely a gradient, allowing for a PB potential. Wind could be a factor. After 3k you turn and head back, passing the start line and run another roughly 2k, turn and head back to the start/finish. With only two (180 degree) turns it’s mostly a case of finding a good rhythm and enjoying the scenery. There is a little bit of animation along the route, particularly at 6k when you pass the start/finish but it’s mainly rural apart from that. The finish area is a fairly simple affair but on a piazza with local cafes. The race has many nationalities taking part, many Luxembourg resident expats. If arriving by car there’s the amusing possibility of parking in Germany and walking over the bridge into Luxembourg and the start area. It’s Schengen ! The town of which by the way is included in the route of the half marathon. The men’s winner was a shade over 30 minutes, the ladies about 37 minutes for the 10k. All-in-all a recommended run in generally perfect temperatures if you find yourself in Luxembourg late September.
