Race report kindly provided by Charles Pridgeon -

“Murcia is not a town you’d quickly seek out for a race, but together with nearby Valencia and Alicante offers some good early season racing opportunity in almost guaranteed sunny (although cold – 6 degrees C) conditions. The three races all offer marathon, half marathon and 10k opportunities, with the Valencia one being a IAAF gold label race. The Murcia race is no ugly duckling to its bigger sister though with a high standard, a decent sized field and perfect organisation. The race trophies were dominated by Scandinavians (leading runner under 31 mins) with the incredible Synove Brox winning the F-60 category in 38:59 (that’s not a typo).

The course itself was modified from last year’s one and I think to its detriment. There is no landmark, river, sea or anything else to distract and entertain you. This is pure racing which in my mind made it a bit dull with only limited crowd support. The final 300 metres in a narrow cobbled street with the finish line in front of the cathedral (with huge crowds) was the only (but amazing) highlight. The course is flat with only a slight and steady long incline on km 6-8 to trouble you. The town itself is pretty in the centre but small so that you head out of town in a series of spoke and hub movements which flow less well than the advertised last year’s course which for traffic management reasons they decided to alter. Instant medal engraving, easy bag drop off and flawless organisation, together with trophies for race categories handed out with a beautiful backdrop of the cathedral are added pluses of this race. Only negative was the uninspiring route”
