Report

“The Athens Authentic Marathon 10k is a large side show to the main event, which is the marathon from Marathon to Athens – definitely a bucket list for the marathoners. The 10k is run the day before and starts just before sunset. You run into the night, which is a formula gaining ever more popularity, but I suppose if you’re very fast you finish just before sunset. The 10k attracted over 9,000 runners making this a pretty big event, although slightly male dominated (64%). There are wheelchair entries too, but be aware that kilometres 1.3 to 5.8 are uphill ! The best way to train for this event would be to set your running machine in your local gym to a 2% gradient and make sure you can hold your race pace for 4.5km. The upside is that the last 4.2km are almost all downhill, the last kilometre quite steeply so, but never uncomfortably. The last 200 metres are in the 1896 Olympic Stadium, which is floodlit and full of spectators, making for an unforgettable finish.

Event organisation was almost flawless, but you have to pick up your bib in person in a stadium hall near Piraeus which is a bit of a drag. Crowd support was very good, the roads wide and the start is seeded in waves according to recent performance. 62 Brits ran the race, and there was an international crowd of Italians, Croatians, Poles etc too.

You probably won’t PB on the course (winning men’s time this year was a course record at a shade over 30 minutes, the ladies winner came home in 33 minutes), but you’ll have the easiest last 2.5 miles of a 10km race you’ve ever had, and an iconic finish to boot.”
