Southern Athletics League
The Southern Athletics League is now the main track and field league for clubs in the SEAA region. Men and women compete in joint (male & female) teams.
Structure (2012)
- Division 1 of 16 clubs as per the end of the 2011 season.
- Division 2 of approx 64 clubs split into 4 regional sub-divisions, formed from the remaining 2011 clubs plus all new league members.
Each club meets every other club in their (sub)divison with a round-robin format for deciding who will meet at each of the five fixtures. For details see the SAL website.
Competition Format
Each meeting will have four clubs, with men and women competing separately in a full timetable of track and field events (100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 3000m/5000m, 100/110m hurdles, 400m hurdles, 3000m/2000m/1500m steeplechase, high jump, long jump, triple jump, pole vault, shot, discus, javelin, hammer, and 4 x 100m and 4 x 400m relays). Each team can have two competitors per event ('A' and 'B' string). On an eight lane track that means that generally the A & B strings will compete together in all races. NB. Key differences from the single-sex leagues are alternating 3000m and 5000m races for men, and the introduction of steeplechase for women.
Points scoring is a simple: 4-3-2-1 for each event, the team with the most points wins the fixture; then 4-3-2-1 for each fixture to determine the league position. Every point is valuable and it is therefore important that we enter competitors in every event.
