The 1066 Relay

Sunday 6th May 2012

The 1066 Relay is a five stage off-road team relay, organised by Hastings Runners, following the route of the 1066 Country Walk from Pevensey to Rye. Starting off in the grounds of Pevensey Castle, the route goes past such iconic landmarks as Herstmonceux Castle and Battle Abbey before crossing through Battle Great Wood towards Westfield. The final two stages take in some glorious countryside, in particular the views from Icklesham and Winchelsea over the Brede valley, before a fast, flat finish along National Cycle Network route 2 into Rye. Stages vary from 3.20 miles to 11.13 miles, and the total race distance is 33.30 miles.

Further details are available on the race website.

Serpentine have entered three teams and registration is open to all Serpentine members on a first come first served basis, no-one is too slow or too new to the club to participate.

The relay starts at 9am, at Pevensey Castle.  The plan is to travel down on Saturday by car, leaving London in the late morning, giving some time for a little exploration of the area on Saturday before a group dinner on Saturday evening.  We will be staying in a budget hotel (Big Sleep) in Eastbourne, which has twin and triple rooms.  For those who have less time to spare, there is the possibility of travelling down on Sunday, and doing one of the later legs of the relay.

Costs

  • £40 - relay, travel and accommodation. For people wanting the whole deal.
  • £30 - relay and accommodation only. For people with their own car and just require accommodation.
  • £10 - relay and travel only. For people wishing to turn up on the day only but need to use the Serpie transport.

If you want to bring your own car and travel on the day (i.e. no accommodation) please contact Catharine Sowerby, the trip organiser.
