Jekyll and Hyde Park Hallowe'en Duathlon

Central London's duathlon - 25th October 2009

The 2009 event was the finale of the Triathlon London League and so the fancy dress was gone and the gloves were off for some ferocious competition beween London's fastest triathletes.  Thames Turbo dominated, winning top 2 men and women's places plus the team prize. Priscilla Queen of the Desert was the only fancy dress contestant but complete with pink Ceepo bike and pink racing flats she was a worthy winner.  The 2010 Jekyll & Hyde Park duathlon will be held on Sunday 31st October - actually on Hallowe'en, so let's see more of you out there dressed to impress!

Serpentine have always budgeted this event to break even.  The entry fee went up this year to accomodate increased costs from the park and to pay for chip timing.  Even so, it is only through the support of our sponsors that we keep the entry fee as low as it can be.  Many thanks go to:

Infinit Nutrition:  Supplied sports drink and aid station.  They also sourced and subsidised the Headsweat race freebee, the unique design for which was created by Serpentine's Richard Melik.  Infinit create race drink for many races in the UK and abroad but their real speciality is customising sports nutrition to individual specifications.

Kalas:  Supplied prizes and also support in the form of their tent for use at registration.  Thankfully the sunny weather meant it was less invaluable than last year but their help is gratefully recieved.  Kalas supply custom team race and training clothing and equipment

Prologue Bikes:  Generously donated prizes.  Prologue are one of those London bike stores with a stock to make you drool.  Drop in next time you are riding round Richmond Park.

Thames Turbo Triathlon Club:  Helped us out with race signage.

And last but not least, thanks to all of you, competitors, volunteers and everyone who contributed to another successful Jekyll & Hyde Park Hallowe'en duathlon.

The course

The entire race is held within Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens, the first run on a beautiful course taking in the footpath around the Serpentine (4.2km). The bike is 8 laps of South Carriage Drive (20.8km) – don't be fooled, it's not flat but it should be fast and the road surface is good. Not done yet though, you finish with two laps of the Serpentine (7.6km). Start, finish, transition and registration will be at the southeast corner of the park where South Carriage Drive approaches Hyde Park Corner. Detailed race information is here.

Information for competitors:

  • The entry fee is £28 for BTF members and £31 for non-members. We continue to run this as a break even event and the increase in price this year is due to inceased costs and the introduction of chip timing.
  • There is a limit of 175 participants. Number swaps are permitted up until Monday 19th October but only with the permission of the race secretary. Please do not let anyone else race under your name without permission. This is both unfair and dangerous and anyone doing so will be barred from all future Serpentine races.
  • There is no strict time limit for completing the course, however the Queen's Life Guard will access the bike course at 9:20 am and any cyclists remaining on the course at that time will have to give way. Transition will be cleared by 11 am. This should be achievable by all abilities but please understand that if punctures or mishaps slow you down, we may need to end your race prematurely. Time limits are imposed by the park officials to avoid inconvenience to other park users.
  • No race information will be sent out in advance, all race day information can be found here.

Important note to Serpentine members

This race is your chance to give something back to your club and to London's multisporters, so our members are not allowed to enter the race. We really want you to volunteer to help except in the following circumstances:

  • You are one of our faster multisporters. This is a London League race and we really want to encourage you to turn out for your club. Men, women and 40+ all count to the points total. How fast is fast? Men should be capable of a 2:15 olympic distance triathlon, women and vets 2:20.
  • You already contribute a lot to the club with a proven track record of volunteering

In each case you must apply to the race director before registering via EntryCentral.
