Swissalpine Davos K42 (28 Jul 2007)
On a boiling hot summer's day, the race started from Bergun in the Swiss Alps and joined up with the 78.5km circular route which had started in Davos 3h30m earlier. It starts going up, does a little loop then keeps going up for a very long time, getting to an angle of about 40 degrees for what seems like forever.
With 1,890m of elevation, peaking at a height of over 2,600m, the course is tough. Plus the weather can vary dramatically with some hail higher up this year and much colder temperatures. But the race is extremely well organised and defeating such a tough challenge is very satisfying. Strangely, the K42 seems like a cop out compared to the K78 even though it's the hardest marathon-distance course I'm aware of.
Not recommended for beginners unless you do the relay, but it provides a great alternative to a road marathon, particularly in the summer when marathons are scarce.
