Green Belt Relay 2022 – Join the Serpentine teams!

We are looking for more runners to join us for the Green Belt Relay in May. This is a fantastic social relay race running with your club mates, with a lot of cheering and being in nature.  Don’t miss the chance to join one of the greatest Serpie weekends of the year!

Green Belt Relay – What is it?

The Green Belt Relay will take place during the weekend of14-15 May. It is an annual multi-stage running relay of around 220 miles of the Green Belt around the outside of London. It is organised by a fellow running club (Stragglers RC) and has been going since 1995. It will involve around 50 teams. More details are available on the Green Belt Relay website.

We are aiming to get 44 runners in our four teams of 11 (men’s, women’s, vet’s and mixed). Thanks to the 34 runners who have signed up so far – we now need at least 10 more to complete our line-up (and preferably a few more to deal with last-minute injuries etc.).

As a club we will arrange travel and accommodation for all runners - however please indicate if you are able to drive a van when you sign up, as it would be a massive help for us to have more drivers.

You will also get a great dry-fit Green Belt Relay T-shirt provided by the race organisers.

What are the stages like?

You’ll take part in some beautiful runs in the surrounding areas of London – from Hampton Court through Surrey, Berkshire, Hertfordshire, Essex, Kent, and finally back to Surrey. Details of the stages can be found via this link. Each stage is an individual race with a pre-defined start time.

You will run about 20 miles over 2 days (roughly 10 miles / 16km each day), but the pace requirement is relatively easy. As a general guide, if you can run a half marathon in 2:20 hours (or faster), you’re welcome to join. Also, although some stages are trail in nature (like the photo below), your runs are generally marshalled by all participating teams (including us) and navigation is generally not very difficult. You will be given route information beforehand as well. Over the years we have not yet had a runner who was lost and could not find the finish!

The race organisers from the Stragglers RC have put together some videos on Youtube for each stage – please check these out if you want to have an idea where you might be running. Once we have all the runners signed up, we will be allocating stages based on pace and/or navigation. Please get in touch if you have any preference on the stages (or type of stages) you want to run, and whilst we can’t offer any guarantee, we will try to accommodate your request.
