Eddie Murphy 1943-2021

We are very sorry to report the death of one of Serpentine's long-standing members, Eddie Murphy, who has died recently at the age of 78.

Malcolm French remembers Eddie and has written this tribute:

I was saddened to learn of the death of long-time club member, Eddie Murphy.  Eddie joined the club in October 2006, but his involvement with Serpentine goes back much further as he was a participant in our New Year's Day race for good many years before then.  Always a long-distance man, one of his favourite competitions was the Cyprus International 4-day Challenge; always a good mid-winter activity break!

After retiring from running, Eddie became an enthusiastic Nordic Walker and supporter of Silverfit.  He marshalled at a host of club competitions, including our Last Friday 5k races in Hyde Park, claiming "his" spot at the bottom of Rotten Row whenever we used the course around the lake.  He was also a key member of the marshalling team at cross county events, heading over to Parliament Hill Fields or Wormwood Scrubs from his home near Elephant and Castle, and always conscientiously applying himself to his duties in his understated and thoroughly professional way.

He will be much missed.
