Isle of Wight Fell Series

14th & 15th September 2019 - Sign up for the weekend trip to the 2019 Isle of Wight Fell Series is now open and will close on Sunday 1st September.

About the series

This is a fun weekend away with fantastic off road running, beaches, paddling, awesome views and (obviously) large quantities of baked goods! The races are challenging (in terrain and gradient) but the ability is hugely varied - some people on the Sunday start early and walk round. This is a fun weekend away and an opportunity to get to know your fellow Serpie running buddies a lot better.

The annual Isle of Wight Fell Running Championships, organised by Ryde Harriers, take place each September and incorporate the SEAA Fell Running Championships (don't be put off by Championship in the title it's open to all abilities). For a number of years Serpies have travelled down as a group for the weekend and we've had some success in bringing home a selection of trophies and a lot of fun!

It's a two day, three stage event running up and down, and around, some of the Isle of Wight's finest hills and countryside. Ability level varies enormously, so everyone is welcome regardless of speed and ability.  Stage 3 is an rather hilly half marathon so make sure you are prepared for this if you enter this stage. The others are  shorter distances but with steeper sections so not necessarily any easier!

The race format is below. You can compete in any combination of one, two or all three events but if you want to be eligible for the SEAA & overall prizes you must compete in and complete all three races (and run in a serpie vest). Be prepared for a little peer pressure from your running buddies if team awards are on the line.

The races

  • Race 1 – St Boniface Fell (AS) – 3.8km, 235m ascent @ 11.00am on Saturday
  • Race 2 – Ventnor Horseshoe (BM) – 12km, 443m ascent @ 3.00pm on Saturday
  • Race 3 – Wroxall Round (CL) – 21km, 487m ascent @ 10.30am on Sunday

You have to enter all / any of the events in advance to qualify for the championship. The closing date for SEAA entries is 10th September (remember this!) but you can even just enter on the day. Again, don't worry about the FRA details - they know who we are!

All runners should register themselves (the club will not be doing this). Races are £8 each or £20 for all 3. You can register on the day but will not be eligible to count towards the SEAA competition.

Entries can be made on line at:

The Serpentine trip

Deposit: £75

Sign up See who else is going...

If you want to join on a travel only basis (sorting your own accommodation) please email and let us know. You will still need to pay the £15 travel contribution.

We travel from Waterloo to Portsmouth Harbour by train on Friday (~4pm, ~5pm and ~6pm trains), then catch the ferry to Ryde and taxis onward to Ventnor where we stay. Accommodation is on a B&B basis and will cost approx £40-£60 per person per night. This figure is based on two people sharing a twin bed room and will vary slightly based on which hotels we end up staying at or if you are in a room of more than 2 people. All the travel and accommodation is organised for you. All you have to do is remember to enter the races!

We will require a payment of £75 which is made up of a £60 deposit for your accommodation (the balance of which to be paid on arrival) and a £15 contribution towards transport costs (the remainder of which is generously subsidised by Serpentine). Note that, unfortunately, this deposit is non-refundable as we have to book & pay for the accommodation in advance.
