Southern Athletics League, 23 June - Battersea: report

We had our third meeting of the season on Saturday 23rd June: we had a cracking afternoon and we finally won a match!

This was our first home competition and it was great to have a large turnout, which also showed in the results with many more wins than before and several PBs. Well done to our race winners: Andy Greenleaf in the 5000m, Helen Gray doubling 800m and 1500m (with a PB and club record in the latter!), Sarah Pemberton in the 3000m, Bartosz Porzuczek in the 400m and 800m (with two PBs), Lamal in the shot, Andy Reeves in the 400m hurdles, Caroline Morgan in the pole vault, Jacquline O'Connor in the 400m and 2000m steeplechase plus several B string first places. Top scorers on the day were Bart P (18.5 points) for the men and Rhi Needham (34.25) for the women. Final results were:

  1. Serpentine 368.5
  2. Newham & Essex Beagles 249
  3. Braintree & District AC 248.5
  4. Vale of Aylesbury 143
  5. Barnet & District 138

Thanks to our officials and helpers who made the match possible and also contributed with 20 points for our team. Ian Hodge, Sally Hodge and Malcolm French did the usual amazing job in ensuring all logistics for the match were ready and spent the day in the field sorting out results and officiating. And thanks to the others who spent their Saturday with us: Sarah MacKenzie, Thomas Martini, Daisy Gladstone, Andy Maynard, Jen Bradley, Milan Misak, Sammy Li, Josie Wildridge, Darren Over, Vanessa, Nicola Kaye (apologies if we have missed anyone).

The next match will be upon us soon: we will be in Luton on Saturday 14th July for the next meeting. Please get in touch with the captains if you’d like to take part. (Report: Nicola Barberis)
