Race conditions

Quite cold, but dry

A two day event for some, running 40 miles on Saturday from Kew to Tring along the Grand Union Canal towpath, and then on the Sunday running 40 miles back. Back to back long runs of this nature are pretty tough. The course is flat, other than the locks themselves - about 50-odd, uphill on the Saturday and downhill on the Sunday - and the path is generally goodish - some concrete, some dirt, some grass/mud. Navigation is pretty simple, with just a few switches from one side of the canal to the other. 121 finishers on the Saturday, 113 on the Sunday, with 48 people completing both days. 4 checkpoints in either direction, with water and some chocolate/sweets at each. A minimum level of kit must be carried (full body cover, headtorch, compass etc). The weather stayed dry on both days, with Saturday quite cold and Sunday a little warmer but a lot windier.

Three Serpies ran both days this year. Oli Sinclair produced a 5:19 and a 5.28 - a great achievement to go sub 5:30 on both days, placing 10th and 11th respectively and 4th out of those running both days. Over the 2 days Oli ran 8 min 5 sec miles! Mark Braley had a strong Saturday, placing 6th at 5:09, and might have broken 5 hours but for somehow getting lost...but he paid for it in spades on the Sunday, taking 6:50 (47th), to finish 9th over the 2 days. James Adams finished 19th on the Saturday at 5:46 and 31st on the Sunday at 6.15, finishing 10th over the 2 days. Simon Freeman ran the Saturday in 5.51 (21st).

The winner on both days was the famous Jez Bragg, who ran 4.26 and 4.27 respectively - or 6 min 40 sec miles, for 40 miles, two days in row!
