Saturday 11th February marked the fifth and final MET League race of the 2011/2012 season. With the league title in our sights; this was our last chance to obtain the points we needed to defend the trophy and take home the win. The day dawned sunny and cold with some patchy snow on the ground, once again we seemed to avoid the mud-fest of the majority of last season's races. Mid-week optimism about defending the title was slightly marked by the fact that many of our usual scorers were unable to race through injury/sickness or general absence; but it was great to see the decent numbers of Serpie Ladies that arrived ready to race on the day.

A fast start saw a small group form with at least an 100 metre gap on the rest of the field. The lead changed several times but the race was eventually won by Victoria Webster (Shaftesbury Barnet) who crossed the line 9 seconds ahead of Hayley Munn (Enfield and Haringey), Esther Evans (Highgate Harriers) a further 6 seconds adrift, took third.

Team stalwart and all round Serpie legend; Liz Wynn, was the first scoring lady in 16th followed by new face, Carla Denney (24th), Laura Dennison (25th) and Helen Windsor (34th). Lisa Petit (57th) looked to have a great run; several of us spectators commented on how strong she looked! There was also a rumour of an internal battle going on between Val Metcalf, Steph Vaatz and Cheryl Sacks. It looks like Val took the glory this time finishing 10 places a head of her fellow competitors!

Despite an awesome effort by the ladies on the day; we didn't quite reach our goal of defending the title..but do not loose faith, we will be back, stronger than ever, and we will win this league again. It has been such a honour to captain the Serpentine Women this Cross Country season. Thanks to all for affording Becky Glover and I the opportunity! Also a massive thank you to all the runners, supporters and organisers that have made this season's MET League possible. Every one of you had an essential role; we could not do it without you.

Huge well done to the Serpentine Senior Men's team who won this match and finished second in the 2011/2012 league!
The MET League may have finished but the cross country season is not over yet! The National Cross Country Championships take place at Parliament Hill, on Saturday 25th February. Last year the Serpentine Women's team came home with a bronze medal, it would be more than great to see if we could defend that position in 2012! Stayed tuned for race details and if you have any questions about representing the Serpentine Women; please contact myself (sylvielloyd@gmail.com) or Becky Glover (beckyjglover@hotmail.com).
