Report

An unusual double marathon, now in its second year. The course is four laps of about 6.6 miles, out and back along the promenade by the river Mersey. A bit cobbly in places, but with an uneven grass verge by the path as an option for the main middle section. Some heavy rain on the second day (despite a sunny forecast). This is a small friendly race, in aid of a veterans' charity, Project 65 (it raised about £2,000 this year). There were 62 finishers on the first day, 52 on the second, of which 30 did both days. Facilities are limited (you bring your own water - there was some at the halfway checkpoint but they'd run out near the end of the first day - and the only loos are in a pub). The start was officially 12pm but it was also staggered so that slow runners, those catching trains etc. could begin at 10am. Timekeeping was by the race organiser's fiancé. Only a handful of spectators but other runners were supportive - the course layout means you see the same faces, regardless of speed, on the way round.
