Race conditions

Overcast with a little drizzle during the swim, driving rain and wind gusting to 65kph during the bike, and sunshine for the run - an autumnal day.

Report

1.9km swim, 102km bike, 20km run. Beate kindly agreed to come down and help me around my inaugural half Ironman - she specialises in this distance and said afterwards that it was the hardest she had done. The swim was a long loop in the Lac de la Cavayère (south-west France) and was great - no wind. The bike ride was on fairly uneven surfaces with 8 classified climbs for a total ascent of 1300m with technical descents making it difficult to make up any time. Added to that was the driving rain and gusting wind creating really chilly conditions. 9 of the starting field of 115 pulled out during the ride. The run featured a loop of the lake and 2 out and backs - one to the countryside and one to the foot of the ramparts of La Cité. So a picturesque run, but the constant steep climbs were more suited to mountain goats!
