Report
Every Spring Bank holiday weekend, the Long Distance Walkers Association organizes a non stop 100 miles self navigating challenge in a different location around the UK. The first runners and very fast walkers can typically finish within 30 hours but the event has a cut-off time of 48 hours.
This year, the 100 was held in Scotland, for the first time since the start of the LDWA in 1972.
It was an extremely beautiful route of 104.44 miles (an extra bonus from organizers) with 4031m of ascent across difficult terrain and remote locations of Perthshire.
Apparently, this was one of the toughest LDWA 100 routes. The first man finished in 24:37, the first woman in 30:13. A total of 495 people took part, of which 109 were women and 175 had not completed a 100 miler before. Finishing rate was 70% both for first timers and for the whole field. 4.5% of starters competed within 30 hours, 20% within 34 hours and 55% within 43 hours.
It was my first 100 and much harder than anything I had done before, but I would recommend it to first timers for the support, friendliness, very competent organization and the pure beauty and originality of the routes, which are meant to please very demanding walkers.
Next year, the LDWA organises the 100 challenge in Shropshire. In 2012, it will be held around London (from Greenwich to Windsor across Surrey Hills) and in 2013 in Cornwall and Devon.
Conditions
Intermittent rain from Saturday afternoon becoming steady after dark with the heaviest downpour in the middle of the night. Sunny and pleasantly warm Sunday, with a clear and cold (at times frosty) night.
