Report

A stop off in the Peak District for this small village race and the chance to sample a proper fell race seemed too good an opportunity to miss. I did not expect to have so many experiences in one race though!

Rain was coming down by the bucket full, even the wily mountain goats at the start line were muttering about being careful on the ridge part. Then we were off, a brief downhill through the village and then into the hills we went. A crazy descent after a mile and into woodland to the slippery ridge part where overtaking was impossible and a 300 foot drop beckoned if you slipped. The health and safety police would wet themselves over this.

As it opened out I made up a few places on the ascent but then we hit the main climb, pure silliness, so steep it was a scramble on hands and knees in rivers of mud. My trail shoes weren't fit for purpose but eventually it ended, and another more gradual descent through fields to see a herd of cattle in total panic knocking over the wall and nearly taking out the guy 100m in front of me. I now understand how cows can crush people to death. More mud and fields before a downhill to the finish. Pleased with my 12th place finish, about 8th vet! Total madness, can I do it again?
