Report

We well know that huge numbers of Serpies descend on Club La Santa in March each year but Richard Hobson’s camp in May also attracts many Serpies looking for a springboard for the summer racing season or to get the Ironman miles in. The camp coincides with a pretty tough Olympic distance which for some is a reason to rest up by the leisure pool for a few days before and for most it is another hard training session. Full credit then to Jenny Gowans who came 5th overall and to Julie Payne who podiumed 1st place in her age group. Both with over 300 km in their legs from the previous 2 days alone.

The Lanzarote weather was uncharacteristically kind; the usual strong wind absent and relatively cool temperatures. That left the major distinguishing features of this race being the extraordinarily rough swim and long climbs on the bike course.

A couple of last chapeaus – firstly to me(!) for taking 3:30 off my swim PB and to Nadya Labib who, far from coming last, completed her bike in over 30 mins faster than predicted.
