Report

Starting and finishing at the Somerset College of Arts and Technology the Taunton Marathon and Half Marathon event is organised efficiently and cheerfully by the Taunton and District Carnival Committee. This was its 25th year and for the second year in succession the race boasted chip timing. A slightly congested start quickly thins out and within a mile you are running through Taunton town centre, before heading out into the pretty Somerset countryside and the villages of Norton Fitzwarren, Bradford-on-Tone and Bishops Hull. This is one of the very few races I have done where the description “undulating” actually means just that – there are no Eigers to climb here, just some gradual rolling terrain and long flat sections to stretch out on, with the most challenging ascent coming at about 11 miles, before a descent to the finish. The weather, so awful elsewhere this weekend, confined itself to some occasional breezy snow flurries. There were over a thousand finishers in the Half, with a smaller, lonelier band of 185 completing a second lap for the full marathon. Two Serpies entered this year, but it would be good to see more next time – well worth the trip out West!
