Report
The Hydroactive Women\'s 5k Challenge was held in sunny Hyde Park last Sunday 3rd September and a small group of serpie ladies ran, along with 20,000 other female runners, in this annual event.
Although billed as more of a fun run for beginners, there was a strong international field which included Berhane Adere (winner), Jo Pavey (second place), Rita Jeptoo (third place), Susan Chepkemei, Benita Johnson and Paula Radcliffe (who, 20 weeks pregnant, \"jogged\" round in a
mere 18:51) and we saw a few other club vests among the bright array of charity vests.
As expected, the course is nice and flat, starting on South Carriage Drive, winding its way up to the Broadwalk, then along a rather blustery North Carriage Drive before turning back into the park near the police station with the finish along the north side of the Serpentine. We were fortunate to get right to the start line behind the elite runners, being able to get a clear start and some good finishing times (with PBs for a couple of us).
Unexpected bonuses, apart from the great weather, were seeing Jo Brand and Floella Benjamin at the start line, and getting on tv just as Paula Radcliffe was being interviewed at the finish (and Val excitedly getting
Paula\'s autograph on her race number).
Serpie ladies had a great day out with the following 5 listed in the top 100 finishers. As this is a race on our home patch, it would be great to see more serpie ladies running next year.
