Race Report from Charles Pridgeon -

“For those who like a bit of warmth and winter sun in your race, Malta is a good option. Besides the fascinating history of the island, Malta also has a series of very well-run races ranging from 5k to marathon. The Gosport sponsored Attard 10k held in and around the village of that name, about 8k from the capital of Valletta, attracts about 1100 runners every January and the winning time of a few seconds over 30 minutes flat attests to the high local standard of running.

The organisers go out of their way to be helpful to foreign visitors, with the option of picking up your race number from officials at the start line instead of having to pick it up in the suburbs of Valletta.

There is mercifully no goody bag before or after the race and also no T-shirt to add to the planet’s microfibre problem. What you get is just 10k of very well marshalled local country lanes with gorgeous views up to the citadel of M’dina in the first 5k. The race is roughly ‘first third uphill, second third flat and last third downhill’. When reading the instructions it was pointed out that roads are not closed, however, the marshalling was excellent and the early start (07.30) meant that the very few cars that were on the road were slow and didn’t bother the runners.

I’m not a medal-fan as many can be tacky and ‘bling’. However the steel and enamel medal of the 10k is an aesthetic piece of art, and is one of five that slot together if you complete their series. All-in-all a very enjoyable, scenic and friendly race with good organisation and good standards.”
