Report

This is one of Swiss most classic mountain race (2015 was the 42nd edition) with about 3500 runners taking part to either the 5am start (65%, mostly walkers) or the 9:30 one (which includes the elite runners - this year winner was Jornet Kilian in 2:33, first woman in 2:56). The race starts in Sierre (550m) with a steep 1400m climb over the first 6km, followed by an undulated and in parts challenging 15km to reach the highest point of the race (2450m) along mountain paths and stunning views over five 4000m alpine peaks From there, it's 10k to go, with an initial gentle downhill and a final, technical and quads-killing 600m descent over 2km to finish in Zinal (1650m). 31km in total with approximately 2100m up and about 900m down. There are usual money for top finishers, but also some cash prices for men breaking 2:55 and women under 3:25. The race is very well organised: support is great along the entire route with 6 water (and isotonic drinks, soup, tea and some food) stations and many people cheering runners on. Weather was perfect with drizzling rain at the start and dry conditions after one hour into the race. Personally, this was possibly one of the most (if not the most) challenging races I have ever taken part to, but certainly a very rewarding ones as well to complete: something to recommend to anybody who likes running up and down mountains.
