Report
Another great day at the third fixture of the Southern Athletics League! This time we travelled to Salisbury, a couple of hour by coach from London, to compete against Andover&Overton (leader of the league after the first two fixtures), Vale of Aylesbury (in fifth position) and City of Salisbury (which host the match and was on
11th position, just 1 point ahead of us). Compared to the last fixture, our team was quite different with some new faces and some of the regulars back on track for the first time in the season: 25 athletes in total, which again was a very good turnout for our club. And of course Ian, Sally and Lars (who celebrated his birthday judging some T&F for the second year) were our officials for the day.
After we found out where the throwing cage was (outside the track, reachable with five minutes walk) and we explained to the organisers that there wasn't any mistake in having a `Nicola' competing for the men team, the day kicked off. And as soon as we started, we quickly realised that the two teams at the top of the league were
very strong with lots of young, fast and bouncy athletes. However, we managed to put some good performances on both track and field events and collect some PBs, which helps us in the point-to-point fight against Salisbury.
In middle distance events we scored as usual a good bunch of points. Pau and Tiago came both third in the 800, so did Tiago and Wes in the 1500m, Miguel (back to very good shape and with a time close to his PBs) and Andy (at his first T&F fixture for us) in first and second place. Women also did great with Mary E (second in the 800m), G (who seemed never tired and run 800m, first, 1500m, third, 3000m, first, and 1500m S/C as non scoring), Lisa (1500m, first) and Vic (3000m, first). These events gave us 36 points.
In the throws, a good mixture of regulars and newbies brought 36 points to the team. Mary D and Sarah got some PBs, whereas David, Tony and Stef were consistent as usual and Vic discovered that she may have a future in the javelin. Just the men javelin had some misfortune, as Danny suffered an injury which limited his throwing action, and Wes, which felt lost on the run-up without either mud or hills, didn't manage any valid throw...he'll have time to make it up on the track later on the day.
In the jumps, we suffered as usual our lack of specialists and, although Pam,Sarah, Deanna, Ben, Joakim (at his first time in our T&F team), Matt and Angus (also at his first time) did their best, we did manage only third and forth. However, there were also good news, as Tony didn't fall off the mattress this time and seemed on his way back to shape with a very decent third place, and we finally succeeded in having two women (Deanna and Vic) scoring in the pv.well done ladies!
In sprints, some of our regulars were missed, but we had a couple of very good surprises (Helen and Angus) to mix with our core team of sprinters. Together with them, Mary E (400m), Deanna (200m), Sarah (100m), JT (200, 400, just recovered from a little injury) and Hunor (out of his comfort zine running 100m and 200m), we had
18 points to add to our scoring.
In hurdling, we didn't manage to cover the only two events of the day (high hurdles B string for both men and women), but Deanna (100 and 400Hds), Stef (400Hds), Joakim (110Hds with an impressive sub 21sec and 400Hds) and Ben (400Hds) compete in all other events and helps the team with 13 points. On the steeplechase, Sarah (with one of the best hurdling of the day) came second in her competition, whereas Wes (who won string A and stopped the watch at the second fastest time ever for a Serpies in 2000 S/C) and myself brought 7 point to our booty.
The day ended as usual with the relays. Our women teams, sometimes used to compete often on their own, found some tough competition on the way and came fourth in the 4x100 and second in the 4x400. For the men, again the competition was quite strong
and a fourth and third were our results.
Worth mentioning that lots of us tried several events as non-scoring, in some cases with such successful results that they even beat the scoring athletes: Vic jumped easily over 130cm in the HJ and Angus threw the shot just under 9m at his first attempt!
We ended the day in third position with 156 points, well ahead of Salisbury (but half through the day we had only two points difference), which we have also overtaken in the overall league ranking: we are now 11th with 5 points after 3 matches. Thanks all for partecipating and to our officials for the help and for contributing with some points to our total scoring.
