Southern Athletics League

The Southern Athletics League is now the main track and field league for clubs in the SEAA region. Men and women compete in joint (male & female) teams. Serpentine are competing in the North West London division.

Divisional structure

  • Division 1 of 16 clubs.
  • Division 2 of 32 clubs split into 2 regional sub-divisions.
  • Division 3 of 50+ remaining clubs split into 3 regional sub-divisions.

Each club meets every other club in their (sub) division with a round-robin format for deciding who will meet at each of the five fixtures. For details see the SAL website.

Competition format

Each meeting will have four (occasionally five or six clubs in the lower divisions), with men and women competing separately in a full timetable of track and field events (100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 3000m/5000m, 100/110m hurdles, 400m hurdles, 3000m/2000m/1500m steeplechase, high jump, long jump, triple jump, pole vault, shot, discus, javelin, hammer, plus 4 x 100m and 4 x 400m relays).

Each team can have two competitors per event (‘A’ and ‘B’ string). On an eight lane track that means that generally the A & B strings will compete together in all races.

Points scoring is a simple: (6)-(5)-4-3-2-1 for each event, the team with the most points wins the fixture; then (6)-(5)-4-3-2-1 for each fixture to determine the league position.

Every point is valuable and it is therefore important that we enter competitors in every event.
