Track etiquette

Track sessions run by Serpentine are usually busy with other clubs and members of the public using the track.

To help sessions run smoother for athletes and for the general public the following guidelines will help your experience of the track more enjoyable:

  • Always run anti-clockwise including when running down the home and back straights.
  • Be aware of other groups and the general public before and during your session.
  • Use the outer lanes (lanes 5 and 6) for recovery runs, warm-up and cool-down.
  • Ensure there is enough space and is safe between you and the incoming runner when crossing the track.
  • When running in lane 1, stay as close as you can to the inside of the track.
  • If passing another runner give them space, particularly when moving back into lane 1.
  • Have a quick glance behind you when finishing a rep for any incoming runners.
  • Be aware of other runners moving into lanes 5 and 6 for recovery.
  • Avoid using headphones when using the track to avoid not hearing other track users or safety announcements.
  • Be polite and respectful to other users of the track at all times. Serpentine do not have exclusive use of the track.
  • Please do not leave litter or spit on the track.
  • Look after your belongings. Lockers are available inside the pavilion.

Please get in touch with the athletics coordinator with any questions or comments.
