June highlights

The first week of June is a busy one for events. On Monday 1 June there’s the Sri Chinmoy 2-mile race in Battersea Park; and on Tuesday 2 June there’s another of the weekly Tuesday Tens at the Lee Valley Velo Park. These excellent 10-mile cycle time trials are on every Tuesday evening throughout the summer with no need to sign up in advance and are attracting a growing number of Serpie participants. For track & field lovers there’s a Watford Open Graded track & field meeting on Wednesday 3 June, where competitors can turn up on the night to race – see more details.
It’s back to Battersea Park on Thursday 4 June for the third race in this year’s Assembly League, which is over 5k. It’s Serpentine’s turn to organise and we need help with course marshalling and in the finish area. There’s no need for you to have done this sort of thing before and it’s always good to involve different people, including some of the club’s newer members. The race starts at 7.30pm and marshals will be needed from 7.10pm. If you can help, please email MalcolmFrench1962@yahoo.com If you would like to run but haven’t taken part in an Assembly League race before, you may like to know that the race is open to all Serpies and it will be good to see a sizeable Serpentine turnout – just turn up with your Serpie top, there’s no need to enter in advance.
The June club handicap is on Saturday 6 June. If you haven’t run the handicap before you can find out more about this regular monthly event, open to all club members. Also on 6 June is the start of the Welsh Castles Relay, and we wish the three Serpie teams taking part this year the best of luck. The third race in the summer Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park 10k series also takes place on 6 June. On Sunday 7 June, there’s another chance to race 10k, this time at the Regents Park 10k, plus the next event in the London Triathlon League – the Clash of the Tritons Aquathlon and as the Serpie teams head to the Welsh Castles Relay finish in Cardiff, another group of Serpies are sure to be cycling the Welsh roads of the Dragon Ride.
The second Southern Vets’ track & field meeting of the season is on Monday 8 June at Hillingdon. If you’re aged 35 or over and would like to take part, contact men’s captain Andrew Maynard, or women’s captain Jan Farmer for more details. On the same night, the Sri Chinmoy 5k will be taking place in Battersea Park. There are more chances to compete at track and field on Wednesday 10 June at the Rosenheim League track & field meeting at Wimbledon. The Rosenheim League is an inter-club competition for senior & U17 athletes. Each meeting has a wide-ranging track programme, clubs can have as many competitors as they want and each athlete can take part in as many events as they want (within UKA rules for U17). Entry is free for Serpies but please wear your club vest! On the same night is the Lee Valley Sprints meeting plus a new members’ evening, giving you the chance to find out about what the club offers.
The London Schools track & field Championships (years 9 and over) is on Saturday 13 June, as is the first day of the SEAA U20/ Senior Track & Field Championships, which continues on Sunday 14 June. Also on 13 June and sure to have Serpies taking part are the Sri Chinmoy 10k and the Blenheim Triathlon. Sunday 14 June is packed with events . These include the City of London Mile and the second Summer League event – this one a 10k in Harrow. The Summer League is an inter-club competition with a main event plus a shorter ‘tenderfoot’ (1.5-2km) race that is suitable for children and a series of light hearted 300-400m relays. There is no need to enter in advance – just turn up and run. On the same day, there will be a number of Serpies taking part in the Windsor Triathlon, the St Albans Half Marathon and the Midsummer Munro, plus some of our junior triathletes competing at the Jetstream at MT’s Triathlon at Merchant Taylors’ School, Northwood.
The London Schools track & field Championships (years 7 & 8) is on Tuesday 16 June; and on the same day will be the first the club’s 2015 Grand Prix: the club championship 3,000m at Paddington. There’s no advance entry needed for these Grand Prix races, you just turn up on the day with your Serpie top ready to run. On Wednesday 17 June there will be another Watford Open Graded track & field meeting.
On Saturday 20 June the third SAL track & field meeting will take place at Battersea track. Contact one of our captains if you are interested in taking part in any of the events: women’s captain Lisa Pettit or men’s captain Nicola Barberis Negra. Note that this competition is open to senior athletes, plus U20s and U17s (i.e. you need to be 15 or over on 31 August 2015). This is also a Serpentine-organised match, so we are looking for offers of help, no experience necessary, as there will be qualified officials who can show you what to do – please contact Steph Vaatz if you can help or for more information. A few Serpies preferring longer distance events will be running the South Downs marathon and half marathon on the same day.
The QEOP Duathlon on Sunday 21 June is also a Serpentine-organised event. If you can spare a bit of time to help at this, please contact Alex Elferink. The Triffic Trail, which is also on Sunday 21 June, has been a popular event with Serpies in past years. Monday 22 June offers Serpies 35+ another track & field opportunity at the Southern Vets’ track & field meeting at Battersea.
June will be rounded off with the Brooks Serpentine Last Friday of the Month 5k on Friday 26 June; then the ever-popular downhill club championship 1k on Saturday 27 June in Hyde Park. The Windrush Aquathlon on Sunday 28 June is the next event of the London Triathlon League. On Monday 29 June is a club committee meeting and on Tuesday 30 June the third race of the club Grand Prix races, the 1-mile club championship, will take place at Paddington track.
Looking forward to early July, there’s another Rosenheim League track & field meeting on Wednesday 1 July, this one at Battersea. The July Assembly League race will be a 5k at the O2 on Thursday 2 July; and the first Saturday in July has both the club’s July handicap and the next SAL track & field meeting in Watford.
There’s more information about lots of these events on the Serpie events planner.
