New website login system

Runner in Hyde Park

What has changed?

The login for Serpiebase has been changed to use either membership number or email address. It uses a new method for storing passwords, which is more secure, and a much more secure way of checking access to restricted pages such as your membership profile. Note that payment pages are unaffected as these are served by WorldPay, not Serpentine.

The process for dealing with expired members logging in is better controlled.

The login system for non-members, giving access to a personal MyResults page has been removed and non-members no longer have this option. It is still be possible to view a page listing all results for a runner but a login is not required.

Why?

The current system with two different login mechanisms is confusing for people, and maintaining a system purely so non-members can access a couple of pages is an unnecessary overhead for the club’s webmaster.

The old members’ login system relied on first and last name. When the system was designed, over 10 years ago, the club had fewer than 500 members and this was an acceptable solution. Since then, there have been over 10,000 people join the club. Whilst most have since left, they still exist as records in the membership system and it’s becoming more and more difficult for people with common names to find a unique login ID. Many members have registered ‘weird’ names to achieve this and it will be better for everyone if members’ records can show their preferred, real, first and last name. Membership numbers are unique, so now that the new system is live those members who would like to can have their names corrected if desired.

The old login systems had various ways of dealing with security in the code. The new system allows us to have a consistent system across the entire website so it’s simpler to maintain.

What do I need to do?

Now that the new system is live you will need to get a new, temporary password emailed to you before you can login.

You’ll see a message on the login screen telling you that it’s the new login screen and that you need to click a link to get a new password. Once you get that in your inbox you will be able to login using your email address and that password. Alternatively you can use your membership number as shown on your membership card. If you share your email address with another member you will have to use your membership number.

If you would like to update your name in Serpiebase, please email membership@serpentine.org.uk with the details.

If you have any other questions about the above, or problems when the new system, please contact webmaster@serpentine.org.uk
