London marathon – Serpie spectating and post-race pub

Runner in Hyde Park

Serpie spectating

As in past years, Sid Wills will be leading the contingent heading to the Highway in Shadwell to watch the race. This is close to the 13 and 22 mile points, so you will get to see the runners twice. The nearest tube is Shadwell on the DLR. Alternatively Tower Gateway and Tower Hill are a brisk 10 minute walk away.

Go to the Highway (south side) where the wheelchair competitors should pass at about 10.00, shortly followed by the elite women. Meeting point is close to the (now closed) Rose Pub in front of the petrol station. St Georges church is on the north side of the Highway. It will be easy to spot the spectating Serpies – just look for the people wearing red hoodies, jackets, hats etc.

If the road is open for pedestrians, to get to the pub / garage cross the Highway and turn to your right (west) until you see the Rose Pub and garage. If the road is closed turn to your left (east) and walk for about 400m to an underpass to cross the road.

Post race pub

We have booked a pub close to the marathon finish, and they are opening especially for Serpentine for some post-race drinks and celebrations for the club on marathon day. The Buckingham Arms (a Youngs pub) will be open from midday to approximately 9pm on Sunday 13th April. They are normally shut on Sundays so I am very thankful for the special opening by the team there.

Full address is: 62 Petty France, SW1H 9EU. The pub has a good range of cask ales and food will be available. Children are also welcome if they are accompanied by adults.

If you have any questions about the above, please don’t hesitate to contact me at social@serpentine.org.uk or Sid at member-liaison@serpentine.org.uk
