March highlights

The first weekend in March is a busy one. On Saturday 1 March there’s the club handicap in Hyde Park; the Ballbuster duathlon on Box Hill; and a late season chance for those pre-entered to get muddy at the Middlesex Vets cross country championships at Wormwood Scrubs. On Sunday 2 March there’ll be lots of Serpies running 13.1 miles as the spring half marathon season kicks off in earnest. There are groups of Serpies running the Bath half marathon, the Berkhamsted half marathon and the Silverstone half marathon, but the largest Serpie contingent (55 signed up on My Events) will be at the Reading half marathon, which is also the the first event in this year’s runbritain Grand Prix series and the England Half Marathon Championships.
On Thursday 6 March 100+ Serpies will be jetting off to Club La Santa in Lanzarote for the annual training trip. The Inter Counties cross country championship takes place on Saturday 8 March at Cofton Park, Birmingham and there should be a small Serpie presence. On Sunday 9 March there will be a band of hardy Serpies doing the 4-lap Finchley 20-mile race.
Over the weekend of 15 & 16 March the Herts, Middlesex and Kent indoor championships will be taking place at Lee Valley. On Sunday 16 March Serpentine will have 3 men’s team and 3 women’s teams competing at the SEAA 12 and 6-stage road relays at Milton Keynes.
The Clumber Park duathlon on Saturday 22 March is the ITU world championship qualifying event and we wish success to any Serpies trying to qualify. On the same day there’s sure to be a decent Serpie turnout at the popular Orion 15 in Epping Forest and the following day will see the return of the Hillingdon half marathon after a 10-year gap!
The Last Friday of the Month 5k will be on Friday 28 March and the last weekend of the month includes the London Fields aquathlon and Paddock Wood half marathon, both on Sunday 29 March.
Looking ahead into April, Wednesday 2 will be the date for the end of season cross country social and the following day is the first of this year’s Assembly League races at Beckenham.
There’s more information about lots of these events on the Serpie events planner.
