August highlights

Runner in Hyde Park

The first Saturday in August is a busy day for club events, with the August club handicap in the morning and the summer party in the evening. All Serpies are welcome at the handicap, whether a handicap regular or a newbie – there’s no need to sign up in advance. If you haven’t run the handicap before and want to find out more, see the details on the website. Tickets for this year’s summer party are sold out but the 240 lucky ticket holders should be in for a really fun evening at the Oyster Shed. On Sunday 4 August it’s the penultimate Regents Park 10k in the 2013 summer series and in Bolton on the same day the Ironman UK competitors will be hoping that the recent heatwave doesn’t return.

The last chance to take part in a steeplechase training session for this season is on Monday 5 August at Paddington track. On Thursday 8 August the fifth Assembly League race of the season takes place over a 3.5 mile course in Victoria Park, starting at 7.15pm. Assembly League races are open to all Serpies, with no need to enter in advance.

The final fixture in this season’s South Athletics League is on Saturday 10 August in Braintree in Essex. Our team is currently in fifth position in the league, only one point off fourth, which would mean promotion to Division 2, so we need to give it our best shot on the last match of the season and try to make this happen. We need as many people as possible, so please contact the team captains if you’d like to take part.

On Wednesday 14 August it’s the final in the Rosenheim League at Kingsmeadow stadium. Unfortunately Serpentine didn’t qualify, but Serpies can take part in the final as non-scorers in track events (the charge is £3 per event). It’s also the final date to submit any resolutions proposed for consideration by the AGM to the Honorary Secretary in writing/email.

Those heading to the Great British Beer Festival on Friday 16 August for the Meal of the Month gathering may (or may not) be planning to run the Pride Run 10k in Victoria Park on Saturday 17 August. But any hangovers should have subsided by Sunday 18 August for Serpentine’s home Summer League race over a 5-mile course in Battersea Park. There’s no need to enter in advance and there are also shorter races for juniors and a relay for all, plus we’ll need helpers to make sure that the event goes as well as the others in the series.

Wednesday 21 August is the final date to submit nominations for the posts of Honorary Officers of the club (Chairman, Treasurer, Secretary) and for membership of the club’s committee to the Honorary Secretary in writing/email. The August Last Friday of the Month 5k will be on Friday 23 August (not 30 Aug).

The last weekend in August will see a Serpie trail weekend trip to the Lake District, staying near Windermere. The group will depart by train on Friday evening and return on Sunday night. There will be optional led runs each day. For more details, please contact trail@serpentine.org.uk. And due to events in Hyde Park in early September, the September club handicap will be on Saturday 31 August. Also on 31 August is Vitruvian middle distance triathlon – the 2013 club championship middle distance race for women only (as the men’s championship has already been decided). For those multi-sporters who haven’t got a place in the sold-out Vitruvian, there is the Hampstead Heath Pondathlon on Sunday 1 September, which starts in the Lido at Hampstead and finishes on the track, after swimming a lap of each pond and running between them.

On Wednesday 4 September, at 8pm, it will be the club’s AGM in the Carisbrooke Hall at the Victory Services Club, 63/79 Seymour Street, London W2 2HF.

There’s more information about lots of these events on the Serpie events planner.
