David Simpson Memorial Trophy

David, who was a long-standing Serpentine member, a jog leader and recipient of the John Stonham Trophy in 2007, passed away in 2011 after a long battle with cancer. He was kind enough to leave the club a legacy in his will and a part of this has been used to inaugurate the David Simpson Memorial Trophy. This Trophy will be awarded on an annual basis for acheivement in hill and off road running, both of which were close to David’s heart.
For the first award, Greenwich Hills was chosen as the focus, particularly as David was key in the setting up of this regular Saturday morning session and attended whenever he could. Karen Hancock, our Greenwich Hills coach, presented the trophy to Jane Fanning. Jane is a regular attendee at Greenwich Hills and has used her hill sessions as an integral part of her training, which led to great success in 2012. Amongst Jane’s 2012 achievements were finishing 1st woman at the Stebbing 10 mile; being a member of the gold medal winning London xc championship team; a half marathon PB at Paddock Wood; and finishing 1st woman (& 1st Serpie) at the 2012 Orion 15. Congratulations to Jane.
