March Highights

Runner in Hyde Park

The Wednesday night longer marathon related runs from the Seymour Centre are getting slightly longer over this period – 12 to 13 miles now and all groups from sub 3 to 3:45 are covered. If anyone wants to lead a 4hr+ group (9+ min miles) then please contact your run coaching liaison representative and come along.

In preparation for the forthcoming T&F season, a series of ‘taster’ jumps / throws / sprint training sessions will be happening during March / April to give you all the opportunity to try something new and to practice these disciplines before the competitions start. Further details will be circulated shortly.

The first part of March will probably be quieter than usual at the Seymour Centre, as a large group of Serpies heads to Club La Santa in Lanzarote for the annual Serpie training trip. If you haven’t booked this year but are keen to find out more in anticipation of 2014, try chatting to any club members you see with an unseasonable sun tan from the middle of March onwards.

Saturday 9 March sees the Intercounties Cross Country Championship at Cofton Park Birmingham. Nick Torry, Hugh Torry, Becky Glover and Richard Phillips have been selected to represent their respective counties and Sandy McDougall is a reserve. Also in March keep an eye open for details of an end of season cross country social for all those who have raced or helped out in the mud and the snow this season.

On Sunday 17 March, 50+ Serpies will be running the Reading Half Marathon, which is the 2013 club championship half marathon. On Sunday 24 March we’ll have several teams taking part in the SEAA 6 and 12-stage road relays at Milton Keynes in top level road races against the best club runners in the country. March is also the start of the spring marathon season, with Serpies running in locations as diverse as Barcelona, Rome, Los Angeles and Liverpool.

For those of you keen on trail running, on Sunday 24 March there will be a group of Serpies running the 20 mile route of the Sevenoaks Circular – an LDWA event with a choice of 15, 20 or 30 miles. More details to follow on the website, club emails (subscribe to trail & ultra distance running) & Facebook.

During March you’ll be able to sign up to take part in the Green Belt Relay, which is on the weekend of 11 & 12 May. The event is a two day, multi-stage, multi-terrain relay around London’s Green Belt countryside and surrounding towns. The route is divided into 22 sections (between 5.7 and 13.8 miles each), and teams consist of 11 runners. Read more about the GBR
