T&F – Coached sessions for Throws, Steeplechase and Sprints – Update #4

All of these sessions are free of charge (although you may need to pay for the use of the track) and everybody is welcome to join.
Throws
Chris Privett (from Belgrave) and Mary Davies have kindly agreed to hold a couple of throw sessions for beginners or for those who need to dust off the winter’s cold.
Due to the refursbushment works taking place at the Battersea Millenium Arena in the next few weeks, the two sessions we had originally planned have now been postpooned.
The next session is then planned on Tuesday 23rd April at Battersea Millenium Arena between 18:30 and 20:00.
The sessions are limited to four-five people per session and places will be allocated on a first come first served basis: registration is mandatory. Please get in contact with Nicola Barberis Negra if you’re interested with details of which of the sessions you would like to attend. If there is high demand, thre will be a waiting list. Due to the limited capacity, please only register if you are sure you can attend: you don’t want to take the opportunity away from somebody else in the club.
There may be some opportunity for progressions for those keen on more practice – details still to be defined.
Steeplechase
This is an event where interest has grown over recent years and it would be good to have some sessions to get a bit of the technique right and help people to build confidence for this event before the start of the season.
Sessions will be designed initially for beginners, but we will make sure that those who have already some experience in the event can also learn from participating. There will be some progressions, so you are advised to come along as much as your schedule allows you to do. Focus will be on body flexibility and the technique to clear barriers and the water jump. Sessions won’t be designed to build your endurance, so they can easily fit into your regular training schedule.
The dates we are currently looking at are the following
- Monday 8th April from 18:45 to 20:15 at Paddington track
- Wednesday 17th April from 18:45 to 20:15 at Paddington track
We hope to be able to run more sessions later in the season, details to follow at a later date. Please sign up on Race and Event Planner if you want to attend (and give us an idea of numbers) or contact Nicola Barberis Negra if you have any questions.
Middle distance
Most of the regular sessions that are organised by our coaches will focus on faster pace and could be used to prepare for track events from 1500m to 5000m. Details of available options are available on the Training page of our website.
Sprints
Coach Chris Husbands will run a coupe of taster sessions for sprinters in April and May. The sessions are aimed for beginners or those who need to refresh their technique and will look to cover basic drills, specific drills//mechanics that apply to starts/acceleration, transition or max velocity/maintenance.
After the first session on Saturday 6th April, which focused on short sprints 60/100m, we are planning to have a second session for longer sprint distances (200 and 400m). This will happen on Saturday 4th May at Battersea Millenium Arena between 11:00 and 13:00.
The session is free of charge, but you will need to pay for the use of the track and changing facilities (£3.80). As the session will be limited to 20 athletes, so it would be good if anybody interested could sign up on Race and Event Planner. Contact Nicola Barberis Negra for any questions
High Jump
Serpies Matt Williams is happy to organise a try-out and basics high jump session for anybody interested in doing a bit of practise before the beginning of the season.
We are still finalising the details, but the session should be on Wednesday 24th April at Battersea Millenium Arena or Paddington track (location TBC) between 19:00 and 20:00. Depending on people’s interest, we may run some more sessions similar to this one laster in spring.
The session is free of charge. Just to give us an idea of numbers, it would be good if anybody interested could sign up on Race and Event Planner or contact Nicola Barberis Negra for any questions.
