Southern Road Relays

Runner in Hyde Park

Women

From Saturday, the women’s captain Vic Crawford reports:

The Serpentine ladies headed to Aldershot for the South of England Athletic Association 4 stage road relays yesterday afternoon for what turned out to be a brilliant day of racing for the club.  Our A team recorded our (joint) second best result ever, coming in in 7th position, while our B team were the 4th B team to finish, 26th overall, and our C team the 3rd C team in 50th position.  This really highlights the strength in depth of the club, with only 2 clubs beating us over the 3 teams – congratulations to everyone to ran.

Teams were as follows:

A team – 56:25 (7th)

B team – 1:01:22 (26th) C team – 1:13:58 (50th)

Sandy Wilson
Helen Winsor
Sarah Pemberton
Victoria Crawford

Marina Johnson
Sam Ludlow Taylor
Caro Harper
Sarah Knox

Jo Beak
Caroline Ringrow
Jen Marzullo
Steph Vaatz

There were some great individual performances and a lot of course PBs – full results are available here.  Particular mention goes to Sandy Wilson, who ran the fastest time a Serpie has ever recorded over this 3.851km course in 13:22, placing 16th out of a field comprised of the best runners from across the south of England.  Bring on the nationals!

Men

On Sunday, the men had to contend with extremely wet conditions and whilst the A team finished less than 2 minutes slower than last year’s team (2:01:35 vs 1:59:44) this was sufficient to push them down into 33rd place (from 66 complete teams) and unfortunately for the first time since 2006 our team hasn’t qualified for the nationals. Our B team finished 47th and C team 53rd.

Teams were as follows:

A team – 2:01:35 (33rd)

B team – 2:09:10 (47th) C team – 2:12:49 (53rd)

The standard of racing from many of the other teams was higher than last year, which is amazing considering the weather conditions. Thank you to team captain Andrew Reeves.
