Serpentine win the Welsh Castles Relay

Getting teams of 20 runners out is never easy. Getting two teams of 20 runners good enough to podium year after year to go to Wales and spend a large part of their weekend in a minibus, is a pretty impressive achievement so I'd like to thank Paul Fromme, Simon Barrett and Teresa Gaillard De Laubenque for all the hard work they've done to get this year's teams together.
We knew it'd be tough this year: Sale Harriers were going to be stronger, Les Croupiers were keen to keep 'their' trophy in Wales for a change, and Winchester were back with a women's team including international class athletes. We're tough to beat in team events though 🙂
I wasn't there this year, but looking at the results it seems like we had a steady start but by the end of the weekend a fair number of stage wins had been ticked off, including a number of mountain stage wins:
Stage 7 – Dolgellau to Dinas Mawddwy – 9.15 miles
Aodh O'Neil 00:51:51
Stage 8 – Dinas Mawddwy to Foel – 10.8 miles
Carla Denneny 01:16:48
Stage 10 – Llanfair Caereinion to Newtown
Helen Winsor 01:31:35
Stage 11 – Newtown to Llanbadarn Fynydd
Teresa Gaillard De Laubenque 01:23:59
Stage 12 – Llanbadarn Fynydd to Crossgates
Richard Milner 01:03:00
Stage 14 – Builth Wells to Drovers Arms
Liz Wynn 01:17:14
Stage 15 – Drovers Arms / Red Kite Centre to Brecon
Laura Denison 01:27:42
Stage 16 – Brecon to Beacons Reservoir
Richard Phillips 00:49:12
Stage 20 – Caerphilly Castle to Cardiff Castle
Maren Urner 01:11:19
This was enough for our men to win by 26 mins but not quite enough for the women who were second by just 7 mins. We also won the Kings and Queens of the mountains trophies (awarded to the best teams over the 6 most mountainous stages: 3, 7, 10, 11, 14 & 16).
Congratulations to all.
