Club La Santa Trip, Lanzarote, March 2012: It’s not just for Triathletes…

Runner in Hyde Park

I have recently been surprised to hear a number of members say that they thought Lanzarote was only for triathletes. Serpentine is a Running Club with an amazing Triathlon section, and Lanzarote is the Club's foremost annual trip. As such it has always been designed to cater for Runners as well as Triathletes. Here are 3 ways a Runner could play the Lanzarote trip:

1) Have a Break from Running:
Have you been run training for more than 11 months without a break? Then maybe it's time you took some time off those legs and took a break from it all. You can spend a week or ten days cycling and swimming or even participating in any of the other sports on offer at Club La santa – tennis, football, aerobics, badminton – the list goes on. You could even take part in your first ever triathlon and find yourself enticed into the Dark Side.

2) Have a Running Break:
Perhaps you are training for a Spring Marathon, or just feel that a week of solid run training will do you wonders. Use a week without work to increase your training volume (carefully!) and get some quality miles under your belt. There will be 10 coached training sessions to choose from, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. All types of sessions will be covered including track work, lactate threshold, tempo, hills and of course the long run as well as strength and conditioning; all distances will be catered for from 5k to marathon; and of course all abilities will be welcomed. Last year we had 15 mins 5k runners all the way to complete beginners. The sessions will be challenging enough for the elite, while the beginner will benefit from training with faster runners.

I will be the run coach again in 2012 and as well as offering 2 run sessions a day, plus the 20mins 1-2-1 consultations at lunch time, new for 2012 will be defined periods of running technique training, condensed from the RunTech courses held recently.

3) Mix it Up – Run and X-Train:
Why not get the best of both worlds: Get in a quality run session each day and then use cycling and swimming to help with your active recovery or as part of a X-training regime. Swimming in particular is great physical and mental therapy after a run and can be of great benefit as part of a Marathon training regime. Although not exactly muscular specific, cycling can improve your aerobic capacity, with minimal stress on the legs allowing you to do more aerobic training than if you simply ran.

So Lanzarote is definitely not just for triathletes – it has a lot to offer every and any runner, whether as a break from it all, as a running week or as an opportunity for some X-training.

PS: If we fill the target 90 places, we will have the added wisdom and experience of newly qualified Run Coach and 2:38 marathoner, Andy Robbins, joining me on the coaching team. This will enable us to provide you with an even more specific and personal coaching environment and will allow even more 1-2-1 consultations than last year.
