Election Statement – Jon Knox

Up front, let me declare I'm standing as a ‘vote for me, change nothing' candidate.

I've been a serpie for more than ten years, and helped in lots of ways, but never through a committee seat. We're a great club not by accident but because of thirty years of effort by countless people – both inside and outside the committee. Keeping things working isn't a lazy choice, it requires effort to stay this good (and is the second law of thermodynamics).

Central is the ménage-à-trois we enjoy with the Seymour and Royal Parks. All of us in this relationship will be stressed in 2012. We and the Seymour will be flooded by new members. The Parks – noticeably commercialised over the last 3 years – will have a headache with two Olympic tris. We need to be careful if our members are not to suffer.

Internally, my vision is to continue small progressive steps in ways to share expertise and workload amongst the many who make stuff happen by recognising experience, being transparent, delegating, and being supportive.

I'm for keeping the club's diversity. I'm not a great runner now, and when at my best was still pretty rubbish. I want to keep the fun-of-the-run for the un-elite that many clubs lose, and want to keep a presence in all the disciplines that we're involved in, even if we're not top dogs.

If elected I hope my tenure as chairman would be forgettable and unspectacular by keeping a great club great.

Election Statement – Charles Lescott

I have been a member of Serpentine for nearly ten years, during which I have run, thrown, jumped, swam, and cycled in about every competition in which the club is involved. I have taken advantage of almost all training that it has offered and been to almost every social event it has organised. I am proud and appreciative of the time and effort our volunteers commit to the club.

My own volunteering has included marshalling in our races and officiating in track and field as a qualified track judge. I have been Officials Secretary, assisted organising the Christmas Party and Lanzarote trip, and captained our track and field team, which meant specialising in high hurdling and the pole vault. In addition I have served five years on the committee, four as Honorary Secretary gaining a complete understanding about how the club is run and how the sports our members compete in are governed. I never missed a meeting whilst on committee and occasionally I chaired them.

A large club like Serpentine requires a great deal of organisation by committee members and the volunteers that report to them. I see the role of Honorary Chairman is to assist the committee to carry out this function. As Chairman I would chair committee meetings in a fair, impartial and efficient way, offer advice and support when it is needed, and provide whatever management the committee members may need.

Serpentine is a great club and I would love the opportunity to be its Chairman.

Election Statement – Andrew Scheer

As a proud member, I am running to serve as Chair because I believe I can make a difference. To be fair, I haven't run every race or participated in every event – I'm a commonal garden member like a number of you. I think that's no bad thing. I believe it means that I can see and seize new and exciting opportunities.

Even the best clubs have challenges; we need a stable home, we need to make it easier for members to get involved and have their say, and we need support to help volunteers.

Timing could not be better. The city we serve is about to stage the best ever Olympic Games. It may be a bit disruptive. But it is also a great time to build for the future by leveraging the goodwill arising from this festival of sport.

My priorities would be; to identify and secure a solid base in the Seymore Centre or elsewhere, to build strategic relationships with partners such as Westminster, the Royal Parks etc., to assess what support the club needs, then develop and deliver a plan to address them, and to look at further ways of empowering all members to achieve their athletic goals.

There are a number of energetic and enthusiastic experts on the committee. As chair, I can provide it with glue and the direction as I have in my commercial and military life. I would be honoured to serve, should you share my vision and chose me.
