Serpies retain Green Belt Relay trophies

Runner in Hyde Park

The Green Belt Relay is a 22 stage, 2-day race on a mixture of tarmac and trail from Hampton Court to Ham over a 220 mile course around London's green-belt, with a pause overnight on Saturday in Essex. We usually have 4 teams racing and this year was no different, with a men's, a women's, and two mixed teams.

I'm not sure why, but this year just about every one of the fastest men in the club was trying to get onto the men's team and the slowest guy was still a sub-1:20 half marathon runner. It was basically 11 of our 12-stage road relay team and providing none of them got lost I was expecting a one horse race. They didn't, and it was. Almost every one on the team won a stage, many won on both days. They finished over 90 minutes ahead of the next team and broke the course record by 27 minutes. Very impressive!

Our women's team were also picking up a fair number of stage wins but while some of the individual competition was of a high standard, there was only one other women's team in the relay so we easily won the overall race, once again proving that the Serpettes are a hard team to beat these days.

Meanwhile, the two mixed teams were having a race of their own trying to be third Serpie team and I guess I must have balanced their team members out quite well as it proved pretty close.

I'd like to thank everyone who helped out over the weekend, especially all the drivers, without whom we could compete.

Look out for the famous 'Green Belt' trophy in the clubroom as I'm sure it'll be on display.
