SCVAC League 9th May meeting report

Runner in Hyde Park

Men's report

This had everything that a good Track and Field event should have: a sunny evening, good competition and a fun, can-do atmosphere amongst the team. The men managed to fill all their slots, with a number of athletes trying new events (with varying success levels it has to be said!). When the final results were known, Serpies had achieved a comfortable third place – a good launching pad for the rest of the season.

It would be unfair to single out individual performances, since the whole team performed extremely well. The only event I will mention, is the 4 x 400m relay where the Serpie men led from start to finish, much to the disgust of Herne Hill!! This result summed up the entire meeting – a great team effort.

The next event is our home meeting and will take place on Monday 6th June. If you are interested in taking part, please contact Andrew Maynard."

Women's report

Serpie ladies kept up their high standards too. We were delighted to see some new faces as well as welcoming back our regulars as well as some less-than regulars too. The only slot not covered was the W60 high jump.  If there's anyone out there willing to tackle it when it comes up again (June 20 at Hillingdon) you would be welcomed with open arms!

We had some very strong performances and a convincing win on Monday night so we really hope we can keep the momentum going for the next three fixtures. Experience has shown that it's harder for us to be sure of as good a turn out away from Battersea so the June 20 and July 18 meetings will be particularly key in our quest for a place at the finals. But we shouldn't give the impression our only goal is to win because we have enormous fun and there are lots of opportunities to take part as non-scorers too. If you are a 35 year old woman or older and interested in being involved please drop me a line or give me a call.

Huge thanks to Bev and Phil for managing the team on the night.
