Serpentine join the Southern Athletics League

The Southern Athletics League is a new track and field league for clubs in the SEAA region who wish to compete in joint (male & female) teams. It was set-up by Serpentine, in conjunction with Enfield & Haringey AC, Harrow AC and Marshall Milton Keynes AC, when our proposals for joint competition within the current SML and SWL structures were rejected.
Track and Field competition in the Midlands and Northern Athletics Association regions has been structured around joint teams for a number of years and we wanted to provide the same opportunities in the South of England region: fewer meetings to travel to, fewer weekends blocked out with T&F meetings, a corresponding reduction in demand on officials' time, and above all, a more sociable atmosphere for the teams with everyone competing and officiating at the same venue (like we have with cross country).
The following 20 clubs have confirmed their commitment to the SAL:
- Ashford
- Blackheath & Bromley
- Chelmsford
- Croydon
- Ealing, Southall & Middlesex
- Enfield & Haringey
- Harrow
- Herts Phoenix
- Luton
- Marshall Milton Keynes
- Nene Valley Harriers
- Orion Harriers
- Peterborough
- Serpentine
- Stevenage & North Herts
- Swindon
- Tonbridge
- Vale of Aylesbury
- Winchester & District
- Worthing & District
Each meeting will (likely) have four clubs, with men and women competing separately in a full timetable of track and field events (100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 3000m/5000m, 100/110m hurdles, 400m hurdles, 3000m/2000m/1500m steeplechase, high jump, long jump, triple jump, pole vault, shot, discus, javelin, hammer, and 4 x 100m and 4 x 400m relays).
