Welsh Castles Relay 2010

Serpentine has 2 teams (men & women) accepted into this year’s Welsh
Castles Relay on the weekend of 12th/13th June, but no vets team, as the
event was heavily over-subscribed. Other London clubs like Mornington
Chasers and Dulwich didn’t get a team at all.
Serpentine won both the men’s and women’s races last year and our two
teams will have a good fight on their hands to defend their titles:
Winchester & District have entered a ladies team again and the boys
always knew that there will be strong competition from clubs such as Les
Croupiers, Thames Hare & Hounds, and Sale Harriers.
The race starts in Caernarfon in North Wales on Saturday morning (12th
June) and ends in Cardiff on Sunday afternoon (13th June), with 20 runners
on each team running one stage each between 9 and 13 miles. You can get
more details about the race on our website
http://www.serpentine.org.uk/pages/race_welsh_castles.html and on
the Les Croupiers website http://www.lescroupierswcr.org/,
including past results.
This is one of the most prestigious races we do all year, and we would
like to hear from everyone interested in racing or coming along to help
out, minibus drivers always welcome. Please let us know if you want to take
part or help with the organization.
To give you an idea of the standard required to be selected for one of the
teams, the men’s race was won in 20:25:25 last year (sub 6min/mile average)
and the women’s in 24:53:43 (around 7min/mile average). Clearly some
runners on each team were a lot faster than that and some a lot slower. Men
probably need to be quicker than 65min for 10 miles to make the team, and
women quicker than 80min. You have 3 months more training time!

Hope to see a lot of you in Wales,
Paul Fromme
