Serpie women 21st in SEAA Road Relays

Emma Calderbank, Sarah Edmunds, Kate Laforet and Helen Mussen gave up a large part of their Sunday to race for their club in the annual SEAA (South of England Athletics Association) 4 stage road relays which are held in Aldershot each September. At 4x 3.851km it\’s a long way to go for a short run but this is our regional championships – the best runners in the south of England were there: Thames Hare and Hounds had Sonia O\’Sullivan and Benita Johnson on their team, for example! This our chance to compete at the highest level and measure ourselves against our peers.
57 teams from all over the south of England raced today. The winners were the host club: Aldershot, Farnham & District in 52:28, closely followed by our rivals from the 2006 Welsh Castles Relay – Winchester & District AC – in 52:42, then Thames Hare and Hounds in 53:10. Emma, Sarah, Kate and Helen had a really solid race in warm conditions and gradually moved up the field to finish 21st (19th A team) in 1:00:19 It\’s not confirmed yet but this should be sufficient to qualify for the national championships in four weeks\’ time.
I\’d also like to thank Jo Conn, Vikki Stringer and Elkie Thorndyke who were also on the squad list but didn\’t end up on the final team.
