Serpiesphere Virtual 5K – Race 7 Results and Race 8 Instructions

Hi Serpies,

Well done to everyone who took advantage of the warmer April weather by participating in Serpiesphere Race 7.

Race 7 Virtual Podium

It was another closely fought contest for the three podium places!

Congratulations to these 3 runners who finished on top:

1st Place: Lloyd Bevan takes the gold medal with an impressive performance, knocking nearly a minute and a half off his previous time which also won him third place in Race 6, with a handicapped time of 58:35 (net time of 23:05).

2nd Place: Frank Womelsdorf just edged ahead into silver medal position, also improving on his previous best time by more than a minute, with a handicapped time of 58:58 (net time of 19:28).

3rd Place: Anne Bennett followed extremely closely behind and earned herself a well-deserved bronze medal, with a fantastic performance having only returned to running in January after a pause due to injury, also with a handicapped time of 58:58 (net time of 26:58).

Also, the fastest performers of Race 7 are:

Fastest Male: Matthew Vokes holds onto the title of fastest male, as well as finishing in the top ten on the handicap board, with a great net time of 17:37 (handicapped at 59:52).

Fastest Female: Victoria Brown takes this title for the third time this series, achieving an impressive net time of 19:57 (handicapped at 59:57).

Best age-graded performance: It’s a double win for Victoria Brown, retaining her title from last week with a fantastic age grading of 79.5%.

I’d also like to make a special mention of the following runners:

  • Marc Doe for impressive consistency – he recorded a time this week of 19:23, which was exactly the same time as his previous entry.
  • Sid Wills for a fantastic improvement of more than 4 minutes from the last race, reducing his time from 42:27 to 38:16.
  • 13-year-old Pip Jones for sustained improvement throughout the Spring series – he knocked close to 3 minutes off his previous race time, improving from 26:23 to 23:48 and finishing just a few seconds short of a podium position. According to his mum Sara Jones, he was inspired by another runner and managed to make such a big gain by trying to keep up.

Photo competition

Thank you to those of you who shared your photos over the past fortnight. There were some beautiful entries this time, so make sure you head to the Serpies Facebook page to see the full collection.

The winner of the photo competition this week is Anne Bennett, with this stunning image of brightly coloured tulips contrasted against a clear blue sky.

Serpiesphere Race 8 – How to enter

Real life races may be starting up again, but I hope lots of you will still find time to squeeze in a 5K Serpiesphere race this week.

Race 8 is open now and will run until 10pm on Friday 30th April.

Just a heads up that Race 8 is the penultimate race of the Spring series. The final race, which will run during the first half of May, will be another A-race which means you’ll score double points for taking part or finishing on the leaderboard. We’ve also secured some exciting prizes to give away to two lucky winners – keep an eye on our updates for more information!

Follow the instructions below to enter Race 8:

1. Run 5K, anytime before the closing date. You can run on any route you choose, wherever you are in the world! Just don't choose a route with a significant net downhill.

2. Enter your time before 10pm on Friday 30th April here. Click "self-add result" and then choose "16 April 2021" (which includes all performances from 16th to 30th April).

3. Take a photo or screenshot that shows your time and distance. This can be a screenshot of your Strava / Garmin result page, or a picture of your watch. As long as the distance is a minimum of 5.00km (or 3.11 miles) and it shows a finish time, it will be accepted.

4. Submit the photo or screenshot here -  before 10pm on 30th April (this link can also be found in the same page as the “self-add result” page). Click “Add Files” and find the file you want to add. You do not need a Dropbox account. This will just ask for your name (so we can correlate your performance with the time submitted) and email address (so you’ll get a confirmation of upload).

5. If you can, also upload a photo of somewhere along your running route. As we're geographically separated at the moment, this is a nice way to keep in touch with where other people are running. There will be special mentions and possibly even prizes for the most artistic photos.

6. Shortly after the race closing time, the Serpie computer system will magically calculate your handicapped time and award your points. You'll score at least 3 points for entering (or at least 1 point if you're a scratch runner), plus extra points depending on your finishing position.

7. You’re welcome to run 5K more than once during the 2-week race period, and then choose your best time to enter. If you’ve already registered a time and then manage to improve on it, just click “edit” after selecting the race date, and change it your new improved time.

More information

Please email Sophie if you have any questions or need help entering your time.

Don't forget to follow social distancing guidelines during your races, and don't run if you have any symptoms of Covid 19.

Good luck everyone!
