Serpiesphere Virtual 5K – Week 11 (20th to 26th June 2020)

Hello Serpies,

Happy Summer Solstice everyone! Last week we had 82 members running the Serpiesphere Virtual 5k – well done to everyone! And Week 11 has just begun…

We had some really good performances last week – 22 of us ran a best-of-series 5k, including George Hudson who ran an (unofficial) PB of 17:11, and Jerry ‘Running Stories’ Lockspeiser who just missed out on a podium place but ran his best 5k (21:43) in a few years. Well done too to Karen Hancock who came back from injury to record a whopping 25-minute improvement, and both Martin Carmack and Siobhan Wakely who finished with the exact 60:00 handicapped time. Amazingly 32 of us have run every week in the past 10 weeks.  I bet you can’t wait for your 11th run on the trot!

Last week’s Virtual Podium

Mums know best, don’t they?? Congratulations to the following runners for being on the Virtual Podium, in particular the two new mums enjoying their post-natal comeback to occupy the top two spots!

1. Maureen Seguin chipped away another few minutes from last week to record a 5k time of 33:57 (handicapped time 56:27), she also sent her love from sunny Wales:

Maureen in Wales

2. Jennifer Bradley impressed us all with a well-timed sub-25 (i.e. 24:59) 5k time, less than 2 months after giving birth (handicapped time 57:59);

3. Hilary Walker continued with her good form in this race series, with a finishing time of 37:11 (handicapped time 58:26).

Also, our fastest performers of Week 10 are:

  • Fastest Male: Hugh Torry – 16:53;
  • Fastest Female: Victoria Brown – 20:44;
  • Best age-graded performance: Andrew Roberts – 89.6% with a time of 18:55.  This is the best age-graded performance so far in this race, are we going to see the first 90% soon?!

This week – How to submit your time

  • Enter your time before 23:59 on Friday 26th June via this link: https://www.serpentine.org.uk/rdb/showvirtual5k.php?race=13494. Click “self-add result”, then scroll to find “Serpiesphere Virtual 5K” and choose “20 June 2020” (which includes all performances from 20th to 26th May).
  • Take a photo or screenshot that shows your time and distance, this can be a screenshot of your Strava / Garmin result page, or a picture of your watch. As long as the distance is a minimum of 5.00km (or 3.11 miles) and it shows a finish time, it will be accepted.
  • Submit the photo or screenshot at this link (also before 23:59 on Friday): https://www.dropbox.com/request/DAXAB7cOY3l0rrJEKbKn (this link can also be found in the same page as the “self-add result” page). Click the “+” sign in the page to ‘Choose Files’. You do not need a Dropbox account. This will just ask for your name (so we can correlate your performance with the time submitted) and email address (so you’ll get a confirmation of upload).

Email me if you are unable to do so. All members who haven't done the race yet are welcome to join - you'll be a scratch runner this week so you won't be on the Podium; from next week onwards you will have a chance to win!

Also please keep your photos coming via the same link – we will show all photos on our Saturday morning Zoom café, with the best one picked for this weekly email.  Your photo could well be next. (Note: by uploading the photos you have given us and the Club permission to use them.) https://www.dropbox.com/request/DAXAB7cOY3l0rrJEKbKn.

After regaining her podium position, our Club President Hilary Walker extended her lead at the top, with a few serial race winners catching up right behind. Full results are here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/mdr72dwel05pduv/Lockdown%20Champs%20after%20Week%2010.pdf?dl=0.

Serpiesphere Virtual Café – Saturday 27th June – NEW START TIME AND LINK!

As usual, next Saturday we will be at the Virtual Café.  With club runs resuming soon in July, we thought it would be a good idea to start getting into a new routine with a slightly later start at 11:30am, just so that we can do our runs first before we chat, catch up, and also the usual announcements. Zoom meeting details are here: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86215892764.

Once again thanks to my co-organisers Sarah Maisey, Nic Barberis and Pete Mackintosh. Any queries about the race, please contact me or one of us.

Happy running,

Hans Ho
