Your weekly dose of Serpentine performances

One of the quiter weekends in the race calendar with a stand-out performance from Gemma Carter at the Country to Capital ultra and all still to play for at the last Met League cross country fixture in Trent Park on February 10th.

Country to Capital 45 Ultra

The 10th anniversary race of this popular and competitive one-day ultra from Wendover to Little Venice once again attracted a merry band of Serpies. They were led home by Gemma Carter, who won the women's race and was 5th overall in 5:53:55. Congratulations! Nicholas Towell was 2nd Serpie in 7:03:35 (52nd), with Matthew Hearne not far behind in 7:06:14. Shout-out also to Rhiannon Needham (8:27:53), Daniel de Belder (8:48:19) and Andy Bain (9:16:43) who all successfully completed the race. Respect!

Met League Cross Country Fixture #4

This season's penultimate fixture took place in Wormwood Scrubs, on a decidedly flat and unscenic but new-starter friendly course. And it is easy to get to so it was great to see a big Serpie turnout, including many first-timers. Long live those New Year's resolutions!

Marta Bagnati led the senior women home in 10th, with Natasha Sheel and Sarah Pemberton finishing in 13th and 15th respectively. Serpentine is 3rd placed in Division 1, and 2nd and 6th respectively in Division 2. It will be close at the last race!

Chris Wright (19th), Dave Morgan (30th) and Tony Payne (34th) were the top Serpie finishers in the men's race. In Division 1, Serpentine is 2nd, with only a slim lead over Woodford. Similarly in Division 2, there's not much in it at the top, with Serpentine currently in 2nd and 8th place respectively.

Parkrun

Helen Gray was first across the line at Calamvale parkrun in 19:11, while Ben Greene won in Thurrock in 18:16. Simon Craddock and Zoe Birchenough bagged 2nd place in 16:52 and 20:42 respectively at Dulwich parkrun. Ally Watson finished 6th in Brockwell in a time of 18:38, while Kemuel Solomon was 10th in St Albans in 19:32. Victoria Basquill ventured to Whitstable and came home 1st lady and 4th overall in 20:05. Theo Tizard finished 6th in Southwark in 17:57 and Ludovic Maillard 4th in Fulham in 17:40.

You can view the full consolidated Serpentine results on the parkrun website. Can't see your result? Updating your parkrun profile with Serpentine RC as your club should do the trick.

Gloucester Marathon

Six clearly was Ally Watson's lucky number last weekend. He opened his marathon season with a 6th position at the Glos Marathon in a time of 2:55:16. Congrats!

Please get involved

Did you or a fellow Serpie have a good race, perhaps even hit a PB? If you would like to see your achievements featured and feted in the next round-up, please email me a few words about the event and, if you have them, photos or videos (please ask for permission if someone else took the photo or video; we will not tag anyone). I will include stories received by end of Monday in the weekly round-up that I usually publish late on Tuesday.

In other news

If you have Serpentine-related photos or videos you are happy for the club to use and share online, please email them to the Social Media Fairies at pics@serpentine.org.uk.

Going forward, I will no longer publish the weekly round-up by email, in an effort to reduce the number of club emails you receive. To continue hearing (reading) about Serpie exploits, simply visit our homepage at www.serpentine.org.uk on Wednesday morning or keep an eye out for our social media updates.

Thank you and happy racing!
