February highlights

A few events to look out for in February

The February club handicap is on Saturday 4 February. All standards are welcome and there's no need to enter in advance. If you haven't run a club handicap before, you can read all about the race here. The Watford half marathon on Sunday 5 February is always a popular race with Serpies. Also on Sunday is a Regents Park 10k plus the penultimate instalment of the Green Belt Recce – a total distance of about 13 miles, starting from Horsley station.

New Serpies are invited to find out what the club can offer them and how to get involved at a new members' evening at the Seymour Centre on Wednesday 8 February.

The final Start Fitness Metropolitan cross country league race of the season is on Saturday 11 February at Alexandra Palace. It would be great to get a really big Serpie turnout at this final event. There's no need to enter in advance and all Serpies, including juniors, are welcome.

The final Sunday League cross country of the season will be on Sunday 12 February on the remarkably hilly Royston course. This is another enter-on-the day cross country event where all Serpies are welcome, no matter what standard. Also on Sunday are the Wokingham half marathon and Worthing half marathon, plus the Harrow Hill race, which offers two unique 'King and Queen of the Hill' awards, for the first man and woman to pass the crest of the hill on the first lap. For those who are looking for a social trail run, there will be a Serpie trail run in the Tring Hills of 9 miles plus optional extra hills.

Sunday 19 February will be a very busy one with the Bramley 10 and 20 mile races, which are always popular spring marathon training events for Serpies, the Old Deer Park half marathon, the Hampton Court half marathon, the Tunbridge Wells half marathon and the Seville marathon. On the same day are the Middlesex Masters cross country championship at Berkeley Fields, Greenford and the Southern Counties Vets Indoor track & field championship at Lee Valley.

There will be a club committee meeting on Tuesday 21 February. If you would like to raise an issue or agenda item with a member of the committee prior to this, please contact us. The February Brooks Last Friday of the Month 5k of 2017 will be on Friday 24 February.

The highlight of the cross country season, the English National cross country championships, will be on Saturday 25 February in Wollaton Park, Nottingham. There's also a South Downs Way social trail run of about 14 miles on Saturday starting from Eastbourne. On Sunday 26 February are the Brighton half marathon and the Roding Valley half marathon, plus a short social trail run in Epping Forest as well as the Dash for the Splash: a 10k trail race on Wimbledon Common.

Looking forward to early March, the club handicap will be on Saturday 4 March. If you have enjoyed the atmosphere of being part of big Serpie contingents in races like the recent Box Hill fell race and Southern cross country championships but prefer road running, the MK half marathon on Sunday 5 March is the 2017 club championship half marathon – entries are still open and it would be great to see lots of red and gold there.

There's more information about lots of these events on the Serpie events planner.
