3000m Club Championship

Congratulations to Izzy Clark (9:50.4) and Jonathan Poole (8:44.3) who won the 3000m championship tonight at Paddington in atrocious conditions. Jon also won the age-graded trophy by a 0.2% margin over Izzy!

3000m

Considering how appalling the weather was, Serpies (and a few guests) showed real determination to race no matter what as 72 people showed up at Paddington to race over 3000m. Possibly even more impressive was the large number of officials and helpers who turned up to get soaked, making the race happen, so many thanks to them all: Sally Hodge, Ian Hodge, Malcolm French, Nicola Barberis Negra, Anthony Stranger-Jones, Steph Vaatz, Tom Martini, Sarah McKenzie, Inger Brandsma, Lloyd Bevan, Lisa Pettit, George Allan and Pete Mackintosh.

For a change this year we decided to try out mixed races all based on pace rather than having separate men's and women's races. The idea being it would reduce lapping and make for closer racing. With the wet conditions it also helped minimise the number of races, and we ended up with just three, each with around 24 athletes.

The championship was decided in race 3 with Jonathan in a group of three guys racing for the overall men's win and Izzy racing a group of men to get the best women's time of the day - and coming within 9 seconds of the 3000m club record set in 1994!
