Super Serpie weekend, Battersea Park 19th - 20th August

If you’re mourning the end of the IAAF World Championships and wondering what to do with your time now there is no more Athletics coverage on the TV, why not volunteer at our very own super Serpie weekend?

Just in case you missed the details the first time, here is some information about all the action coming up this weekend, 19th and 20th August. I still need helpers on both days, so if you can spare some time why not come and celebrate grassroots competition at it’s best.

Saturday 19th August is the final Summer Athletics League match of the season, held at Battersea Millennium Arena. I am looking for volunteers for the match to help with track and field duties, inputting results and announcing. No experience is necessary for any of these roles and all equipment will be provided. You would be required between roughly 11.30am and 5pm.

Our team captains Nic Barberis and Mary Davies are hoping to field strong teams to maintain our place in division 2. If you would like to compete please do drop them a line. The full timetable for the match is available here: there will be 5000m (men) and 3000m (women) plus 2000m s/c for both gender (in separate races). We need two scorers for each event, but non-scorers are welcome too: no particular ability required, just a bit of enthusiasm, these matches are always a good mix of great racing and lot of fun. And this will be one of the last free chances to score points for the Virtual Icosathlon.

Sunday 20th August is the final Summer League event, with a 10k held in Battersea Park at 9.30am, followed by a tenderfoot run for 6-14 year olds, a fun run for under 6s, and finally the team relays. This family friendly event is open to everyone of all abilities, no need to register in advance.

As we are hosting this event I am looking for volunteers to help set-up and marshal the course, manage the finish funnel and record finisher numbers – some of these roles are also compatible with running the 10k race, so please let me know if you can help but would also like to run. Most volunteers will be needed from 9 – 11.30am. Anyone who has taken part in a Summer League race before will know about the impressive spread of cake and sandwiches provided by the host club after the race, so we will also need lots of baked goods and snacks – to help us manage the catering, please let me know if you can bring something.

Hosting two events on one weekend is a big challenge, and I’m hoping lots of people competing on one day might be able to volunteer on the other. If you can offer your time to help Serpentine with either of these great events, please contact me on races@serpentine.org.uk. Helping at these events will also give points for securing a club place to London Marathon 2018 and they are a great opportunity to give something back to the club.

Thank you,

Daisy Gladstone
